The fatalities of war are usually discussed with stark numbers and statistics, which often distances us from the reality. But when I saw the photos of 20-year-old injured soldier Spc. Marissa Strock — bold, fearless, and yet still vulnerable — I was reminded that we rarely see the faces of the people directly involved in conflict on the ground, whether our own soldiers or the citizens of the country itself.
These photos are from "The Unknown Soldier" by David Jay, a series of photographs of young, severely wounded soldiers returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Regardless of whether you support these wars, I hope photos like these remind you to take a moment to remember the faces behind the headlines and statistics.
