We Don’t Hear Enough From Native American Voices. Here’s An Inspiring Message From One.
The Oglala Lakota live on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, near the Black Hills. The area has a pretty tragic history of violence, broken treaties, and culture clashes, beginning in 1874, when prospectors discovered gold in the Black Hills and the U.S. government seized the land previously guaranteed to the tribe. Today, what little we hear about the reservation is usually about the poverty, violence, and alcoholism. While that does exist, that is just one story of many. I wish we heard more stories like this, about the beauty of the land and the spirituality and strength of the people.
