South Africa has one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. Same-sex marriage is legal, while discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal. As inspiring as this is on paper, in reality South Africa is often as homophobic as the rest of the African continent.
So when two young men got married, not in a registry office like many gay couples but with all the singing, dancing, and ritual that goes with a traditional South African wedding, it was huge news. Tshepo and Thoba's wedding was a major milestone for gay rights in Africa, and of course beyond faaabulous.
