It may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but fully autonomous weapons systems (systems which "would be able to select and engage targets without human intervention," according to a recent Human Rights Watch report) are already being developed by multiple nations, including the United States. At the risk of stating the obvious, this strikes a lot of people as an absolutely horrible idea.
