Some clichés are powerful because they’re true. For example, you’re never too old to follow your dreams—even if said dream involves playing the synthesizer in a popular hard rock band as a 70-year-old grandmother without any obvious credentials in the world of heavy music. That’s exactly what happened back in 1982, when one sweet-looking lady joined Thin Lizzy for a one-off performance on the BBC series Jim’ll Fix It.
The show, which ran from 1975 to 1994, granted the wishes of ordinary people. And according to various sources, including Dangerous Minds and Portland Mercury, this installment featured a woman named May Booker, who wrote in to the program in hopes of fulfilling her rock ’n’ roll fantasy. The result was both heartwarming and musically powerful.
Booker’s incredible keyboard cameo
Booker became Thin Lizzy’s sixth member for a performance of the up-tempo single “Hollywood (Down on Your Luck),” adding backing vocals and churning out a nimble solo (on what appears to be a Oberheim OB-X synthesizer) next to their actual keyboardist, Darren Wharton. It’s hard to tell if the band is actually playing or simply miming to a pre-recorded track, but Booker’s part sure sounds and looks live. It’s a lovely little addition, full of unexpected melodic choices. She seems to be having a great time, as does the band, most of whom are visibly smiling throughout.
After the song, Booker walks to center stage with Thin Lizzy singer-bassist Phil Lynott, who presents her with some gifts from the band. (Is that a framed copy of her sheet music?) They also engage in a little banter about Booker’s musical talent and whether she should start a band formed entirely of senior citizens.
“That old lady can jam”
Lots of Thin Lizzy fans have been charmed by this video over the years, expressing their admiration for Booker’s musical talent and the band’s generosity. Here are some of the top YouTube comments:
“That would be my Grandma May – She played in an old Skiffle/Rag band in 50’s Bristol but this has to be the highlight of her career!! She wrote the keyboard solo herself and “that laugh” was genuine!!! I’m sure she is up there with Phil now – terrorising him! God bless you Grandma May… p.s. Found your big dangly earring behind the sofa…. x”
“Only Lizzy and Phil Lynott have the humility to bring a beautiful senior citizen into one of their videos. Philip was a genius.”
“Grandma on the keys, how awesome is that? Lizzy!”
“Mrs. Doubfire on keyboard really rocks!!”
“Tears on my eyes, indeed. This keyboard solo is so beautiful and sweet!”
“You see Phil at the end of the video giving the older lady her due respect.”

“Old Granny just loves their music Wow”
“This is absolutely fantastic. Pure joy in this lineup with the guest, but her playing and solo truly belies her appearance- she had the skills to be part of their band any time!”
