He was the lead singer and guitarist for Nirvana, a grunge band that was popular in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Although he died at the young age of 27, he made a huge impact on music, helping give alternative rock its day in the sun.
But he did more than that. Cobain was a feminist. He believed in equality of every kind. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about issues that weren’t as widely as discussed over 20 years ago.
Here are a few of my favorite Kurt Cobain quotes.
Cobain on rape.
Yep, that’s right! Back in 1991, Kurt Cobain was fed up with women being taught to avoid getting raped instead of men being taught not to rape. Unfortunately, we’re still fighting that same narrative today, but regardless, his thoughts on the topic were on point.
Cobain on bigotry.
Cobain asked bigots and racists to please stop being Nirvana fans, please and thank you.
Cobain on oppression.
While some might take issue with the word “totally,” the fact is that women weren’t treated equally back in the ’90s, and they’re not treated equally today. Women make less money than their equally qualified male counterparts, women are underrepresented in Congress (holding just 131 seats of the 535 in 2019), and women’s right to choose is constantly under fire. Cobain may not have known what women would be dealing with over 20 years after he made this remark, but once again, he nailed it.
