Like the Beatles said, “Take a sad song and make it better.” Several dozen fourth-and-fifth-graders from the famed P.S. 22 Chorus in Staten Island took those words to heart when sister duo Aly & AJ stopped by their classroom during some down time from their current tour. The students joined the former Disney Channel stars for an incredibly moving performance of Aly & AJ’s recent single, “Silver Deliverer,” in honor of the chorus’s 25th (silver) anniversary.
While the song’s melancholy lyrics are about feeling lost and uncertain about what lies ahead, the kids’ exuberance and youthful harmonies transform the mood to one of hope and joy. During the group’s warm-up, a YouTube video shows the Southern California siblings visibly touched, with AJ unable to hold back tears.
Equally riveting to watch is Gregg Breinberg, the enthusiastic director of the P.S. 22 Chorus, who said the kids only had three practices in which to learn the tune and add their own unique flourishes.
“I love how you guys sang ‘Silver Deliver-ah’ instead of the harder ‘Silver Deliver-er,” AJ told the students.
“Are you sure it’s just not our Staten Island accents?” Breinberg asked.
“It might be that!” AJ laughingly replied. “I want to commend you guys, not only for your skill, and your talent and your beautiful voices, but for your joy and your kindness, because you are all so sweet. The hugs, the love you brought us…made us really happy. We’re going to take this joy and bottle it for the rest of the tour.”
“This was one of the most special experiences we’ve ever had on tour, truly,” Aly added.

In the video, Breinberg then turned to his class and joking remarked, “This would probably be an appropriate time for you guys to publicly apologize for making this poor lady (AJ) cry while you were singing. Does anyone want to say they’re sorry?”
A boy got up from his desk and walked “menacingly” toward Breinberg in true Staten Island faux tough-guy fashion,. “Uh oh, he’s mad!” Mr. B exclaimed, as the camera went comically awry before the video cut to black.
The P.S. 22 Chorus is no stranger to making guests cry. Earlier this year, Carrie Underwood choked up when she joined them in a performance of one of her early songs, “So Small”—which she originally sang with an earlier P.S. 22 Chorus in 2012.
Although the P.S. 22 Chorus has regularly been in the spotlight since it was founded by Breinberg in 2000, with each school year, a new P.S. 22 Chorus is born. The institution is not a school for the arts, nor is it a magnet program. It’s an ordinary public elementary school with ordinary students who sing under the direction of an extraordinary teacher. The young artists have been profiled on Oprah, Nightline and Sesame Street. They sang at Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration in 2008, and at the Academy Awards in 2011. The P.S. 22 Chorus has also performed with Jon Batiste, Katy Perry and Tori Amos, and famous fans of theirs include Cyndi Lauper and Coldplay front man Chris Martin. They’ve even earned a Webby Award for Artist of the Year in 2010—an acknowledgement that each of their social media pages had racked up millions of views.
Aly & AJ—aka Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka—were signed to Hollywood Records in 2004, when Aly was 15 and AJ was 13. A year later, they released their debut album, Into the Rush, which went on to win three Radio Disney Music Awards and an American Music Award. They released their sixth studio album, Silver Deliverer, this past May. Opry described their sound as a blend of “sun-drenched California rock” and “country-tinged folk.”
The duo’s 2025 national tour ends November 9 in Santa Barbara, CA.
