Ash Beckham gives a great TED Talk about the often contradictory, dual identities we all have.

There are times in life that we're called out to choose a side, to definitively declare that we are One Thing or The Other, without any room for nuance or discussion. But the world we live in isn't so black and white.

So You're Not Sure If You Should Ever Use The Word 'Gay?' Here's The Handiest Flow Chart Ever.

Meet Ash Beckham. She has some really smart and hilarious things to help you out the next time you are thinking about using the word "gay." At 0:43, she makes the point I've been trying to make for years. At 2:10, I start feeling like I'm in an awesome church. And at 4:30, she gets to the point. Listen to her.

I wrote to Ash to ask her how I could help, and she said she'd really appreciate it if you would take the time to Like The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) on Facebook. Also, sharing this would help bunches as well. And you could totally Like Ash on Facebook if you like funny people. Totally your call though.

A Kid Came Up To Her In The Hall And Told Her She Saved His Life. He Wasn’t The Only One In Tears.

At the beginning of November 2013, one of Upworthy’s curators shared a fantastic TEDx talk by Ash Beckham about having difficult conversations. According to Ash, the video had been out for about a month and had around 2,000 views when Upworthy got ahold of it. It now has over 8 million. One of those views was by a kid who came up to Ash after a presentation and told her something incredibly moving. Ash was kind enough to share her story with us, and we wanted to share it with you because we think it’s pretty amazing that something as simple as sharing a video can change a life. Be prepared to get out the Kleenex around 4:20.
