It’s important to note that we don’t yet know what motivated the attack. But many believe it’s related to the newspaper’s decision to publish satirical images of the Prophet Muhammad — the same reason Charlie Hebdo was firebombed in 2011. People all over the world are shocked and outraged.

Anyone who commits violence against someone else because of something they wrote or said deserves to be condemned. It’s equally important to remember in times like these that no one group or religion is responsible for the actions of a few extremists.
Many Muslims are roundly speaking out against this horrible act of violence. And yet, some in the media are, as usual, pretending they don’t exist. Thankfully, others are calling out the hypocrisy.
Free speech is a value that has no culture or religion. Charb, one of the cartoonists for the newspaper who was killed today, said it best.
