Seventeen years ago, Beverly Weurding, was diagnosed with a degenerative disease called Muscular Dystrophy.
It’s my belief that wheelchair dancing can change one’s life forever. With wheelchair dancing one experiences the beauty, grace and inner satisfaction of dancing on wheels…
one roll, one stroke at a time.
We have no limitations except those we place upon ourselves.”
Fueled by her passion to dance again, she gave birth to an unstoppable sequence of events that brought wheelchair dancing to what it is today. In 2008, with the support from Sharp Grossmont Hospital and funding from several Foundations and a dedicated dance director, the very first Ballroom and Latin Wheelchair Dance Program was launched on the West Coast. The free dance classes brought together wheelchair users and dance partners to experience the joy of social dancing.
Joe Torres is the Dance Director for Wheelchair Dancers Organization. He has been teaching and performing for over 20 years. As the dance Director for WCD, he has the opportunity to share his joy, passion and love for dance with the physically disabled. His unique teaching techniques enable people with disabilities to discover their inner spirit for dance and music. Joe has also performed in various dance venues throughout Southern California adding to his expertise!
“Just one look at the confidence and joy that the performers display as they glide along in their wheelchairs rockin’ and rolling to the music, is all you need to realize that this is a life changing activity ,not just for the dancers ,but for the people that have the opportunity to see this great dance expression unmatched by any other dance venue.”
