The Super Bowl Ad That You Should See If You Think Little Girls Can Become Epic Rocket Scientists

The Super Bowl would have been way less awesome without little girls launching a rocket into space.

The Problem: Fewer than 3 in 10 graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM fields) are women. And barely 1 in 10 actual engineers are women.

One Solution: Two years ago, an engineer named Debbie Sterling launched a Kickstarter campaign to make toys that helped little girls take an interest in STEM fields.

Using stories instead of instructions to guide them to build simple machines, the campaign was a great success, and Upworthy fans raised $100,000 beyond what Debbie had already raised. A year later, they made an amazing ad that 12 million more of you watched. And apparently many of you voted for them in Intuit’s Small Business Big Game commercial contest, as they ended up winning the opportunity to air an entirely new commercial at the Super Bowl, where more than 100 million people got to meet them.Take a look at the long version of the commercial. And then go encourage your daughters to build things.
