exploiting children

We published a short video by former teen model Jennifer Sky, and it was seen by almost 1 million people on Upworthy alone. It has generated some attention on the industry's issues, and there is momentum building.

Here's what Jennifer had to say about it — and we'll update this with more as things move from "in motion" to "got it done!"

"Since Upworthy published my Child Model PSA, I was connected with a congressional leader who is currently speaking with legislative drafters on how a federal Child Model bill might be structured. This is very good news for child model advocates and for those that care about workers' rights in general. With the New York State law as a guide, we may hope for a national and international law to follow. Protections such as school-night curfews, on-set hour limits, chaperones, tutors, and mandatory financial trusts need to be established globally. With 54% of models beginning to work on or before the age of sixteen, we have no time to lose. Thank you again for taking the time to watch, share, and sign my petition calling for Child Model labor reform. In the words of Diana Spencer from Sebastian, FL: 'Fashion isn't always pretty. Protect these children from exploitation.' Our voices can be heard if we speak together." — Jennifer Sky

Here's the original Upworthy post that got this started, featuring her PSA about what happens to some child models. And here's the cover of her book about her experiences.
