baby shower

Perhaps there is a right and wrong way to throw a grandma shower.

Grandparentsgrandmothers, in particular—often earn a bad reputation for using the arrival of a baby to shift the spotlight towards themselves, rather than becoming a support system for the new parents. Insisting on cutesy nicknames like “glamma” comes to mind as an example (that's not to say that grandmas can’t elect to have alternative nicknames; it's more so the lack of collaboration that’s sometimes involved).

And growing more popular over the past few years is the “grandma shower” trend, which is essentially a baby shower, complete with all the usual fanfare, such as games, gifts, registries, and the like. However, this time, the celebrations are geared towards welcoming a first-time grandma into her new role.

With the aforementioned factors in mind, it’s probably no wonder that critics have called grandma showers “tacky” and attention-seeking. One person even took to X to call it “peak boomer entitlement.” As far back as 2010, etiquette expert Judith Martin referred to it as a shallow gift grab.

Perhaps, if we allow for nuance, we can see that there may be some circumstances where grandma showers are appropriate.

As popular grandparent advice site More Than Grand explains, having a group of coworkers celebrate a grandma shower during their lunch break, for instance, is virtually harmless, as are any other kind of low-key shindigs, since they don’t actually take anything away from the parents.

Additionally, gifts could be a viable option if grandma is doing most of the caretaking and can’t afford to get these things herself. At least then, it’s the village’s needs that are being supported. Shared grandparent wisdom or grandparenting books could even be a good grandparent-specific gift that doesn’t necessarily cross a line.

HappiestBaby.com also had a few other helpful guidelines:

-Not having the grandparent/parent host the party

-Wait to schedule the grandma shower for AFTER the actual baby shower, and obviously don’t schedule it for a competing time

-Don’t double-dip on the invite list

-If creating a registry, simply share the parent’s. Don’t create a separate one.

It should go without saying, but a lot of these common icks that come as a result of grandma showers could be avoided by simply consulting the mom-to-be on what she’s comfortable with, More Than Grand argues. Much of the conflict in this area stems from not giving parents the respect they deserve as the ultimate authority on what’s best for their child.

Of course, becoming a grandparent is a wonderful moment that is genuinely worthy of celebration. However, as is evident by the overwhelming number of absentee grandparents out there, it is not nearly as involuntarily life-changing as becoming a parent. And that seems to be the major thing that ruffles feathers. Keep this in mind, and having a slice of cake that says “congrats GMA!” shouldn’t be an issue.

Woman's mom makes surprise visit to baby shower but she hilariously keeps overlooking her

She was so busy hugging friends that she didn't notice her mom was standing right there.

Woman doesn't recognize her own mom at baby shower

Sometimes we get caught up in the moment and overlook details that are right in front of our faces. It's usually little things, like forgetting a bag or not remembering what your spouse was wearing. But sometimes, we overlook some pretty significant things and it's something that can really only be explained by excitement.

A moment like that was caught on video and shared with LADbible on social media.

One woman having a baby shower was doing her duties greeting guests who arrived, particularly excited about a pair of friends that showed up. Hugs, smiles and greetings flowed while one person stood awkwardly to the side hoping the pregnant woman would stop to notice her. The woman sort of smiled as she watched the mom-to-be gush over her friends as she hugged their necks. It didn't take long before the pregnant woman looked in the direction of the person waiting to be greeted.

But it didn't register who was waiting patiently for a hug, until again, she looked in the direction of the woman waiting. Nope. Still didn't click.

One of the friends she was hugging looked baffled and amused that this very pregnant woman didn't notice her mother standing there. The girl's mom snuck into town to surprise her daughter for her baby shower but it took her daughter quite a while to figure out what was happening. Even after her friend spun her around to look in the direction of her mother, the woman only says, "there's lots of cameras."

When one of her friends physically point her to look in the direction of her mother, she looks shocked. Her mom lives out of state and isn't expected at the baby shower so the shock is real. The surprise quickly turned into hugs and giggles of joy and you can see the whole thing below.

A grandpa shower is the best thing you've never heard of.

Becoming a grandparent is a really big deal. It's almost like a promotion of sorts, especially because grandparents get to spoil their grandkids silly and send them on their way. It's just another way to expand on the love you have for your own child, and if the baby is lucky, they'll get amazing grandparents that build a special bond with them.

Lila Chirico's dad is one of those guys who was simply born to be a grandpa. So much so that his co-workers wanted to share in his excitement of preparing for his first grandchild. His daughter is pregnant with her very first baby and the grandpa-to-be couldn't be happier.

Chirico was able to capture the adorable moment when her father's co-workers surprised him with a "grandpa shower." If you've never heard of a grandpa shower, no worries. It's something his co-workers came up with to shower the soon to be grandfather with joy and more baby items than he could imagine. His reaction was priceless.

"The ladies at my dad's work threw him a 'grandpa shower.' He's worked in the same department for over 30 years," Chirico shared via text overlay.

As he's about to round the corner to his surprise grandpa shower, you see one of his co-workers behind him jumping up and down in excitement. The granddad-to-be's face beams when he sees all of the bags and boxes of baby stuff, including a bib set that reads, "My grandpa loves me more than baseball." Chirico concludes that grandpa showers should become a thing, and I couldn't agree more.
