Why Are People Eating Their Own Trash?

There are a couple of reasons this disturbs me: First of all, I don't want to be anywhere near a sentence that pairs "eats" and "trash" and doesn't involve the phrase "trash compactor." Second, what are we really deciding is unimportant when we just toss our plastic bottles and stuff, instead of recycling them?
