This Woman Has To 'Prove' She's A Lesbian Or She'll Be Deported

Curated by

Apata Aderonke Adejumoke is a lesbian from Nigeria, whose family was murdered because of her sexuality. In 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a bill that makes being gay an imprisonable crime, therefore making Nigeria one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a lesbian.

The United Kingdom is trying to deport her home. Hear her story below.

Here's a recap on the law behind this via the Causes campaign website:

In the UK, LGBT asylum seekers are being forced to "prove" that they are gay in their application — even undergoing intrusive interviews about their sexual behavior. Aderonke is no exception. After much criticism, Home Secretary Teresa May announced on March 28, 2014, that this system would be reviewed and reformed.

The UK asylum system needs to change, but Aderonke cannot wait until then. She has two weeks to prove that she would be persecuted and even killed in Nigeria because of her sexuality. We need the Home Office to grant her asylum now.
