Robert Redford gives an inspiring speech to world leaders about changing the course of history.
"Nothing less than the fate of our planet is hanging in the balance."
Legendary actor Robert Redford came to United Nations on June 29, 2015, with one mission: "To save the world before it's too late."
Many of the officials present were really excited to see him.
But Redford was all business.
"Nothing less than the fate of our planet is hanging in the balance."
Extreme weather events like the recent heat wave in India and Pakistan, which has already killed over 1,200 people, inspired Redford to speak up.
"Moderate weather seems to be going extinct," he said. "As temperatures rise, so do poverty, instability, and conflict."
And most importantly, we have to act now. Before it's too late.
"Today we can no longer claim ignorance as an excuse for inaction," he said in his address. "Because it's the overwhelming judgment of science that climate change is real and the result of human activity."
After the speech, Redford did what any 78-year-old Hollywood legend would do: He logged onto Twitter.
He spent about a half hour answering questions and suggesting future steps. Here's a selection of tweets (he's "RR," in case you were wondering).
He was candid about what needs to be done next:
He talked about the role that businesses can play:
He explained how ordinary people can get involved:
(And P.S. — Here are some great ones.)
He was excited about the emergence of a fresh, fierce perspective:
Youth? Check. They're on it.
And most importantly, he was clear about the greatest weapon humanity has on its side in a fight that can sometimes seem so daunting.
Yes, Robert Redford. Yes, times a thousand.
