In 2009, artist Chris Jordan’s shocking photos of dead Midway Island Laysan albatrosses sent waves around the Internet. The birds died from diets heavy in toxic and indigestible plastics — mostly from human waste. According to the BBC, one-third of all chicks on Midway Island die from the plastics they ingest. Now, The Midway Island Project, headed by Jordan, exposes how even an island thousands of miles from the nearest continent can be affected by our everyday actions.
